THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—After reading Mr Murray’s letter in last Tuesday’s issue of the Shannon. News, I think it is only fair to the Committee) to state that l owe them (but not the teaching staff) an apology for my statement about them. Mr Murray made it clear, in xuy opinion, that the Committee are doing their best to raise funds for a picnic without going from door to door begging for money. What can the Committee do if the teachers will not help? I have heard certain teachers complaining of the “miserable pittance” they receive for teachig, but, sir, don’t you think that for the hours they work, 25 per week, they are well paid Roughly speaking .they have only 40 to 42 weeks in the year to work, and paid for all holidays, and yet they object to a few hours extra to give the children a day at the.sea. I am quite prepared to make this offer to the committee: If the teachers will prepare children for two items in a concert, I will train boys or girls for an equal number from two of the following poets: Campbell, Whittier, Burns and Cole>ridge, and Charles Dickens. —1 am, etc., > Q.E.D.
