The ball organised by Mr Alfred Seifert. and the men of the Miranui mill,
to be tendered to the residents of Shannon, takes place this evening at the Druids’ Hall, admission to which is by invitation. Football enthusiasts were much disappointed when the news reached Shannon that the rep. match set down to be played here next Wednesday kad bean cancelled.

This locality produces large quantities of tubers each year, and is one of the spots where the culture is followed with considerable success.
An Ihakara settler who lias been spending a lew weeks in the Walrarapa states that thalHistrict lias been experiencing bad weather for some months, quite the reverse to that on this side of the range. The country did not look so well as on this coast, and growth was not. so well advanced.
Attention Is drawn to an advertisement by Messrs. Gardner Bros., of Shannon, that on and after August 1 they will deliver milk in Shannon for 4d per quart, cash, which is 2d less than at present. Coupons available at Vaughan’s, stationer. Time for receiving tenders for erection of. two cottages at Shannon has been extended to August 8. Further particulars will be advertised later.
The young man Leonard Richard Macalister, who was arrested on Monday evening for the alleged theft of a bicycle from Mr Sam Anderson’s residence in Nathan Terrace, was brought before- Mr Stout, S.M., at Palmerston North on Wednesday. On the application of the police a remand was granted until August 31 to enable them to procure witnesses. Other charges are pending. Mr Barnett, of Mr. Gunning’s staff, was removed to the Palmerston Hospital yesterday suffering from pneumonia. His many friends will hope lor his speedy recovery?The many friends of Mr A. Mudgway will be sorry to hear that his son was removed to the Palmerston Hospital on Tuesday last, and was operated on I'qr appendicitis. He has since developed pneumonia, and is in a very critical condition. A team of golfers journeyed to Levn on Wednesday, and although suffering defeat, put up a creditable performance for beginners. Levin, in their usual hospitable manner, entertained the team, and thanks were accorded them by the visitors.
The local Tennis Club will be holding their annual meeting next month, and as several new players have signified their intention of joining, the prospects for the coming season are bright. Quite a lot of sickness is reported in Shannon, mostly of the “flue” type. Boh McKetch is a patient in the Northcote Hospital, Palmerston, suffering from pneumonia.
The latest aspirant to the Manawatu seat in Parliament is Mr A. H. Vile, who is standing as an independent Liberal.
Meetings will be.iield in Shannon and Tokomaru in connection with the Horowhenua Electric-power Board’s loan poll, when the Engineer and Chairman will explain the proposals. Times and dates of the meetings will be advertised .in next issue.
