FOOTBALL COMPETITION.
HUI MAI IN PREMIER POSITION
SENIOR RESULTS. Foxton 9, Wanderers 3. Shannon defaulted to Hui Mai. Old Boys defaulted to Weraroa. JUNIORS. Wanderers 19, Weraroa 5. Shannon 15, Rovers 6. THIRDS. Rovers 6, Weraroa 5. The week-end football competition brought about a change in the positions that practically settles the fate of the championship this year. The Wanderers, who were in the leading position with Hui Mai, visited Foxton, but the local backs were too clever for the visitors, and the game ended in favour of the home team by 9to 3. This is the heaviest defeat the Wanderers (have suffered for a considerable time. Foxton is to be congratulated on its win. This club has shown vast improvement this season, and has come through with a splendid record. Shannon failed to keep their appointment with \Hui Mai, and the latter got the game by default. Hui Mai is therefore leading, with Foxton a point behind, and the Wanderers next, another point away. Barring accidents, it is unlikely that Hui Mai can be ousted from their present position. If the championship ends so, Hui Mai will not be grudged their success. For years they have been the runners-up, and are worthy of the success that looks like coming their way now. Another game which went by default on Saturday was the Old Bays-Wferaroa game, which was to have been played on the Levin Domain. The Old Boys failed to appear, but in any case the game would have had no effect on the championship. Two junior games were played in Levin, Wanderers-Weraroa and Shan-non-Rovers. In the first game, the Wanderers were too solid for Weraroa, and won by 19 to 5. The Blacks have a fine set of forwards, who are always on the ball, and their powerful rushes took a iot of stopping. Nevertheless, Weraroa battled on pluckily, and at times penned the Wanderers behind their twenty-five, but could not break through to add any further scores.
1 In the Shannon-Rovers game the visitors won by 15 to 6 after a fast and fairly even game. Shannon were much the heavier of the two teams, and their forwards got most of the ball from the scrums, which gave their backs every chance. They made very good use of'their opportunities, and never failed to make the game open when the chance offered. The Rovers' forwards played a very solid game, and carried the play to the visitors' quarters frequently, whilst several chances to improve their score were narrowly missed. The game was interesting from start to finish, and was kept at a fast pace thoroughout.
