HOROWHENUA RUGBY UNION.
COMBINED TEAM MAY MEET ALL BLACKS. The weekly meeting was held on Tuesday evening, Mr E. J. Nash presiding. The Wellington Rugby Union wrote asking if a Horowhenua-Manawatu team could meet Wellington on September 23. ' ' The chairman stated that.there was a possibility of a combined team playing the New Zealand touring team early next month, and it may be as well to hold over the Wellington letter till next .meeting in event of something coming out ot- the match with the New Zealand team. This was agreed to. ' The Rangitikei Union wrote submitting the names of E. Gaisford and T. Richardson for the position of referee in the Horowhenua-Rangitikei match for the Bebbington Shield to be played at Bulls next Wednesday. The dhairman objected to Rangitikei nominating referees ,as Rangitikei, when the first match was played at Levin, asked that an outside referee he appointed.
It was unanimously decided, to ask (he Rangitikei Union to appoint an outside referee.
Mr T. Parata reported that during the progress of the Old Boys-Hui Mai match on June 17, he had to order Joe Hakaraia, of Old Boys, and Arthur Bevan, of Hui Mai, off the field for rough' play. Hakaraia was the aggressor, and the referee was certain anyone would have done as Bevan did under provocation. He recommended that Bevan be dealt with leniently as Hakaraia was the cause of the trouble. The referee also reported Webby (Old Boys) for walking off the field during the progress of the match. Bevan was present, and explained that Hakaraia rushed and grabbed him by the throat and attempted to throw him. Bevan said he was merely defending himself when the neiere'e came up and ordered Hakaraia off, after which the referee said he (B.evan) might as well go oft* too. Hakaraia was very excited.
It was unanimously resolved, on Mr Thomson's motion, that Bevan's explanation be accepted, and that his suspension be lifted. Father Vibaud stated that he had been informed that Webby had.gone \ off because a try that had been scored by Old Boys was disallowed by the referee.
The chairman considered there was nothing wore© on a football field than a team or player walking off. Such an offence should be severely dealt with. Both Webby and Hakaraia' should' h-ave been present' to speak for themselves. Mr Thomson suggested giving botth an opportunity of sending a written statement, to be in toy next meeting, their suspension to stand meantime. A motion to this effect, moved by Mr Dixon, was carried, the players to attend the meeting, or failing that, to send a statement.
It was reported that some clubs playing in the Union competitions were still unfinancial in the matter > of their fees, and on Mr Percy's motion it was resolved that clubs in arrears by IB noon on Saturday next be suspended. .Mr Carmichael was appointed manager of the Horowhenua team to Rangitikei next Wednesday, and Mr Desmond coach.
Mr Whibley moved, in accordance with notice, that the Wanganui match set down for Levin be cancelled. He stated that he moved the motion with the idea of having the game played at Foxton. The Manawatu match was understood to have Been played at Foxton, but was later changed to Levin, and it was only fair Foxton should get anyother rep. gamQ -neither Wanganui or Wairarapa would do. Father Vibaud seconded. The chairman said the Union should go where it could get the best gates.
Mr Whibley considered if that was so, both Foxton and'Shannon should be taken into account. Shannon had, in fact ..Weaten the Levin gate records.
Members did not consider it advisable to go away from the natural centre, Levin, where good gates had always been obtained. Mr Whibley stated if Foxton did not get a rep. game jhere would be much disappointment, and there may be other action taken.
Mr Dixon moved an amendment, That all rep. matches be played in Levin.
This was seconded by Mr Bevan, and carried.
Mr Whibley thereupon said that such treatment might lead to Foxton, and possibly Shannon, breaking away from Horowhenua.
