THE SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL.

SITE SELECTED: WORK TO COMMENCE. . The meeting of citizens called for Tuesday evening to fix the site of the Soldiers' Memorial caused considerable interest, and the Council Chambers were filled to overflowing.' The Mayor, Mr Murdoch, presided, and called for proposals regarding sites. ,

Mr Spencer proposed a site at" the end of Stout Street, near the present memorial.

Mr Carter suggested a, site at the end of Ballance Street, at the entrance to the small railway gate, and, in doing so .explained that the monument being a four-sided one, with names on all sides, would in this position have a path all round it. Further, it was a prominent position, being the junction of the principal business streets,. When the piece of land on the south side was beautified, which he presumed it would be, the monument would have a pleasing setting. Mr Bo.vis proposed a site in the present gardens. There being no further sites sug j gested, a ballot was taken, and the site proposed by Mr Carter was carried by an absolute majority—Ballance Street 22, Stout Street. 11, Reserve 3.

The Mayor thanked those present for the interest, shown, and the meeting closed. The work of erecting the monument is to be proceeded with immediately.
