The Wanganui Chronicle says: At present a meeting of prominent native's is being held at Ratana, under the leadership of llatana. The meeting is of political significance, and the business is to deal with the appointment of a candidate to contest the West Coast seat in opposition to Dr. Pomare. Ratana's eldest son is being proposed as the candidate, and, in view of Ratana’s influence over the native people, his election is in all probability assured. Albeit there is some regret being expressed that the really excellent efforts by Rat-ana in spiritual things during the past year or two are apparently being displaced by sordid political concern, and it is felt the good results of the spiritual working may quite easily be dissipated if tliei new movement is allowed to surmount the spiritual. It is to be hoped that better counsels will prevail, and that Ratana will continue to confine his efforts towards elevating the ideals of the native people through the means >tftiidh have proved so successful. Arjy departing therefrom may have none other than unfortunate results. -
