HOROWHENUA RUGBY UNION.
WEEKLY MEETING. The llorowhenua. Rugby -Union met on Tuesday, members present being Messrs. E. J. Nash (president, in the chair), R. W. Percy, L. Dixon, F. Whibley, M. Winiata, W. Thomson, W. Bevan, Father Vibeaud, and L. S. Carmichael (secretary). Mr F. Williams, of Foxton, and Mr S. Parker, Otaki, were appointed junior rep. selectors for the northern and southern districts respectively. It was decided that any clubs wishing to enter teams in the Manawatu seven-a-side tournament be permitted to do so.
The Otaki Old Boys Club applied for the transfer of A. Hakaraia from senior to junior, and A. Wallace from junior to third, grade.—The transfers were refused.
The.' Tokomaru juniors were granted permission to play in the Manawatu seven-a-side tournament on June 3.
The Foxton Club applied for the transfer of two players, S. McGregor and C. Green from junior to third grade.—Granted.
The clearance of H. Williams, of the Kuku juniors, was approved, provided he wishes to play for any other club.
It was decided that Kuku be informed that a player cannot play for any two clubs in one season, as per rule G. The New Zealand Rugby Union wrote stating that arrangements in connection with the North v. South match ' had to be altered, and the match would now be played at Auckland on Saturday, July 1. Nomination of players close on June 1 instead of June 26 as previously announced. New Zealand representatives leave for Sydney on July 20, and were expected to return on August 21 or 28. When nominating players for the. North v. South match, unions were specially asked to indicate which of the men could leave for the N.S.W. tour should they be selected. It was decided to hand the letter on to- the rep. selectors. Mr Winiata stated that a shield competition for rep. Maori teams only was held in the Wanganui and adjoining districts. He thought there was a chance of sending a strong Maori team from Horowhenua, and if occasion demanded it they were willing to pay their own expenses. Mr Percy said if the Maori team went under the jurisdiction of the Horowhenua Union that would be all that was wanted. There should be no objection to that—an opinion that members, agreed with.
Mr Winiata said he was not quite certain as to the conditions under which the shield was held, and it was decided that the secretary write and obtain full particulars.
REFEREES’ ASSOCIATION. The usual meeting was presided over by Mr R. W. Percy, and attended by eleven members. A letter was read from the Horowhenua. Rugby Union asking that only senior referees be appointed to senior games as far as possible. It was decided, to comply with the request. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr O’Connor, seconded by Mr Procter, that the Horowhenua Rugby Union be thanked for what it has done for Mr Claridge, and that this Association fully appreciates the practical sympathy shown. Mr Procter inquired why the referee for the Rangitikei-Horowhenua match was appointed outside the Union, and it was explained that the visiting team asked for an outside referee.
It was decided, on Mr Procter’s motion, that in future three names of referees be submitted for selection to visiting teams.
