THE COUNTY VALUATIONS.
HOW THE RATES ARE AFFECTED. SOME SPECIMEN PAYMENTS. The county clerk (Mr P. W. Goldsmith) produced an interesting return at the meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Wednesday, showing the rate levy on properties in the four ridings under the old valuation, together with the amount of rates payable under the new valuation, on the basis of the rate that has been struck for 1922-23. The figures make interesting reading,, and are as follows, the instances quoted being taken from different points of the four counties:—
WIROKINO RIDING. [Rate Id in £, same as previous year.)
NEW COUNTY RATES. LOWERED IN OTAKI AND TE HORO " RIDINGS. *
The county estimates and the striking of the rates for the coming year were considered at a meeting of the Horowhenua County Council yesterday, and after consideration a scheme of rating was adopted. The Tokomaru Riding decided on a rale of |d in the £, which is slightly higher than that, of the past year. The Wirokino rate of Id will remain as before, (btaki has reduced its rate by |d in the £, and is the same as Wirokino, Id. In Te Horo there has been a reduction of id in the £, ihe new rate being gd instead of lad as pievailed in the past year. The scale of rates in the various ridings for the years 1921-22 and 1922-23 are as follows:
1921-22 1922-23 Tokomaru Riding fd |d
Wirokino Riding Othki Riding Te Horo Riding .
Id id ljd id l|d id
Although the rates have been lowered in two ridings, the amounts payable by ratepayers in some cases will be larger than those of the previous year, owing to the operation of the new valuation, on which the rates foi 1922-23 have been based. The increase in the bounty estimates, as explained by the chairman on Wednesday, has been made necessary by th.e heavy and increasing upkeep of the roado through the growing motor ti affic of the last few years.
