LEVIN STOCK MARKET.

SHEEP AND PIGS IMPROVE

The market in Levin on Wednesday found an improved tone prevailing for both sheep and pigs, and advanced prices rulipg. The entry »n both these sections was on the small side, and competition Was good, a total clearance being effected. In pigs the best competition was for heavy, well-finished porkers, which realised up to £3 5/ and'£3 6/. Other prices ranged down to 35/ and £2 for lighter weights. Stores and weaners were not much sought after, and were quitted at: moderate rates. Practically the whole "sheep entry comprised fats in wethers, ewes and lambs, all of which commanded a ready sale at improved prices. The entry was evidently not sufficient to meet buyers’ requirements, and the sale closed very firm.

Cattle, and especially beef cattle, met poor inquiry. A fine pen of fat bullocks was yarded, but it hardly brought a bid. Another line not so good was sold at £4 6/, whilst fat cow beef Was quitted at what would be regarded as store values a few years ago. Young dairy heifers met a good market, and the best sorts were run up to £5 and £5 7/6 before being knocked down. In the dairy cattle, good cow's near profit w’ere the best sellers, spring cal vers on the other hand going at reasonable prices.

Pigs.—Weaners 5/, 8/, up to 12/: .stores 16/, 17/, 19/ and 20/; porkers 30/ to 35/ and 38/ for light to £2, £2 2/, £2 5/, £2 14/, £3 5/ and £3 6/; choppers £2 to £2 17/6. Sheep.—Fat wethers 20/11 to 26/ and 30/, the latter for a small choice lot; fat ewes 13/2, 14/4, 17/1 to 18/7; fat lambs 14/7 to 20/ and 23/ for extra good.

Cattle.—Good forward bullocks £4 6/, fat cows £2 4/, fat heifers £2 5/, store cow T s to 28/, steers £2, yearling heifers 35/. 39/, £2 8/ to £2 11/, according to quality, w’ell-bred yearlings £4 7/6 to £5 and £5 7/6. In the dairy cattle, the best brought up to £l2 5/, others £9 10/, £6 10/ down to £5.
