ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING OF LEVIN

BRANCH

A meeting of the Levin branch the Acclimatisation Society was he’l last week. Mr J. C. Milnes occupiel the chair. . Mr C. Bouid was elected distrt u representative on the "Wellington society-. It was decided that application he made for the district’s full quota of trout fly and yearlings for liberation next season, principally ih the Ohau and Otaki streams. An application is also to be made for 500 rainbow trout for liberation in the Duller Lake. This sheet of water has never been stocked, though there are a few trout there at present. War is to be continued against shags and hawks, and it was decided to pay 2/ a pair for shags’ feet, and 3d a pair for hawks’ feet. Payment will be made on 'the shags having been shot on inland waters. Last year 114 pairs'of shags’ feet were paid out on at 1/6 a pair. The pheasants liberated last season were reported to have been seen and to be in good condition. These birds were liberated on private property, and in order to allow them a chance to multiply, the owner of the property intends this year to keep it closed for shooting.

The present sanctuary .'lor deer on the Tararua ranges, which extends from the Otaki River to Shannon, is, it was decided, to be maintained, despite the agitation for its removal. In this connection it was mentioned that this was the only preserve on the whole length and width of the ranges, and that in any case a deer was a migratory animal, and if one was in the sanctuary for a year there, was no reason to suppose that it would stay there for ever.
