PEARL WHITE IN “THE THIEF.”
The local theatre has secured the • big William Fox production “The Thief,” with Pearl White as the star, for presentation on Saturday. “The Thief * is based on Henri Bernstein’s celebrated stage success of New York, London and "Paris. The combination of a star of Pearl White’s magnitude and a. story as great as this should prove an extraordinary attraction. “The Thief” is a story of a woman who marries a man who cannot give her 'the fine clothes worn by other women in his social circle, and their sneers and the snubs of the men cause her to steal money "or gowns. Her wonderful clothes bring a change at once. Women patronise her.* Men try to make love to her. And one man even takes the blame for several thefts, to shield her. “RIO GRANDE” ON MONDAY.
A feature that reveals great, artistry and supreme skill is “Rio Grande,” the special attraction at the local theatre on Monday. The story, from the play by Augustus Thomas, is a faithful interpretation of life on the Mexican border and the conflict of “Gringo” and “Greaser.” in the star: role is Rosemary Theby as Maria Inez, the daughter of a Mexican father and Amertcan mother. She is taught to hate the Gringoes. 3n late years her father becomes an insurgent.leader and she is obliged to do many things^for the cause. One day while out. riding she is chased by the Federalists and falls into the hands of a Texas, ranger, Danny O’Neil. He enlightens her on the subject that the Americans are friends of the Mexicans, and not enemies. His good nature and sincerity win her heart, and after many thrilling adventures she marries him. Rosemary Theby as the Mexican girl is excellent. In action, manners, and appearance she is everything that could be desired. The flavour of her act-
ing is true to the life that can be found on the other side of the Rio Grand. The love theme in the picture is strong and appealing, while the life on the borderline is faithfully depicted.
