WATER FOR SHANNON.
PROPOSAL TO CONNECT WITH MANGAHAO.
ENGINEER’S REPORT ON ALTERNATIVE SCHEMES.
The engineer to the Shannon Borough Council (Mr R. attended a meeting of that body this week in connection with the water supply scheme, ing report before the "Council: —
Pursuant to a reference to an inspection of the Mangaore Stream noted in my last report, dated February 20, 1922, I have made a careful inspection of this source for a supply of water for Shannon and find that owing to the elevation of the Mangaore Road, and owing to the character of the surface of. this district, the extra length of pipe required renders the proposition impracticable. I have also inspected the wellknown saddle in the first range of hills lying between the Mangaore Stream and Shannon, with a view to taking the water direct to Shannon over the high country, but find this could only be done by means of a tunnel under the range at the saddle, which would make the work tar too -costly. While inspecting this locality, which is part of the Otauru Stream water-shed, I have looked into the question of securing a supply from this source, and the following is my report'thereon. Firstly, the catchment of this stream is very limited, and produces only a very small volume of very indifferent water, and is quite unsuitable for human consumption. After taking all. the facts into consideration, 1 have come to the conclusion the water from the electrical power station, after it has been used for power purposes, will provide ample supply of good water for domestic and all usual purposes' for Shannon. I now propose to take detail levels along the most suitable pipe track available, and also at the best site-lor a. reservoir, and will'sub-
sequently submit to your Council for consideration a report and estimate on a complete scheme. Mr Edwards further slated that although he had not yet arrived at an exact estimate of the cost entailed in using the Alangahao water, be was sure the scheme would be well ithin the limits of the expense to which Lie Council was prepared to go. The report Was adopted, and a committee was appointed, consisting of
the Mayor and Crs. Spencer and Gardner to work with the engineer and assist him in any matters connected with the furtherance of the scheme.
