BOROUGH HOUSING SCHEME.
PLANS PREPARED FOR £615
HOUSE
On behalf of the Housing Committee, a statement was made by Cr. Hyde at'the meeting of the Shannon Borough Council on Tuesday evening that satisfactory plans and specifications had been prepared for the erection of the cottages under the housing scheme at a cost of £615 each, independent of the, section, and it only remained for the Council tO' sanction
the scheme being proceeded with. In
that case tenders would he called lor lor a. suitable piece of ground. "We cannot buy the land until we
get the money,” said the Mayor, “and it- takes some time to get money
under this scheme. First you have to
get the order and that takes a month, and then it has to be Gazetted. R is a very cumbersome method. Perhaps it is made that way to keep people away.”
In. reply to a question 'by Cr. Murray, the Mayor said the scheme couid be proceeded with without taking a poll of the ratepayers. Cr. Murray remarked that no* private, speculator would choose the present time for buildng. Of course, he added, the Council was not doing me thing as a speculation. The Mayor: “We are not doing it to make it pay. We will not lose on the scheme, though.”
Cr. Hyde observed that a private speculator, would have to pay 6 or ?
per -cent for the money, whereas the Council obtained it lor 4.}.
In regard to the question ol tenancies, Cr. Hyde said the iirst applicant should have the firsr house, and ttiat the Committee considered £SO a reasonable sum to put down. Cr. Farglier said that this mailer should he discussed by a full Council. There were two members away, and, as this matter was coining up, a summoned meeting should have been .✓called.
After some further discussion it was. resolved that a special meeting be called lor next Tuesday night, when the housing scheme will be discussed by a full Council. In regard to the probable rent, of the cottages, Cr. Spencer said 15/ would cover everything, but the Council would no dohbt increase it m 17/ in order to provide for a sinking fund and stand-toy. Cr. Gardner considered another shilling would be any amount. The Mayor remarked that it was a difficult thing to decide, but he would be in favour of an extra 2/6 at least. If by any unhappy chance a bad tenant'got into one of the houses and did not pay his rent, it might, take some weeks to evict, him, and the Council would have to stand the loss.
