THE RAILWAY CUT.
To the Editor.
Sir,—The Railway Department has a funny way of working things. Whilst our service as a whole is losing money, the returns show that the entire loss comes from the South Island, and the North is showing a profit. The heads consider there is only one cure for a working loss, and that is a ‘*cut. ” They are therefore cutting out the Wellington-Auckland expresses in this island, and in the south they are reducing the Christchurch-Invercargill to three days a week. In other words it means cutting out a service that is paying and maintaining one in the south that is not paying. But that is the Government way, and perhaps explains the condition the railways are in at the present time. If a private business man had something that was showing a profit he would boost it and apply the cut to unprofitable business only.—l am, etc.,
