MANAWATU BRIDGE ENDANGERED.

CONFERENCE OF LOCAL. BODIES ARRANGED.

The question of the encroachment of, the Manawatu River at the SliannonFoxton bridge was discussed at a meeting of the Manawatu County Council last week, and a letter from that body was received at the Horowlienua County Council meeting on Saturday, it was stated that the Engineer had pointed out the necessity for taking immediate action to safeguard against interruption of communication by road in the near future, and the following resolution was passed: “That the Council views with alarm the danger to the road and embankment near the Shannon bridge by the encroachment of the Manawatu River, and that the llorowhenua County Council and the Foxton Borough Council be invited to send representatives to meet the representative of this Council at. the Shannon bridge and confer as to what steps should be taken to keep the road open for traffic.” The writer also observed that lie had been directed to suggest- that the conference take place as soon as possible.

Cr. McLeavey said be understood they were to- meet the Manawatu councillors last, month.

Cr. Barber said the arrangement of the meeting was left to him, but be was unable to get the member for the adjoining riding of the Manawatu County to fix a date, and the meeting was not held.

The chairman (Cr. - Monk) said the llorowhenua Council Committee already appointed should meet the Manawatu and Foxton delegates at the bridge during the present month, as the matter seemed urgent. He suggested Monday week, February 20, as the day of the meeting.

This was agreed to, the County Clerk being instructed to make the arrangements.
