BIG WHALE ASHORE.
OPPOSITE PAREMATA STATION
A whale, reported to be about 60ft in length, came ashore on the beach opposite the Paremata' "Station—a few miles on the city side of Plimmerton—on Saturday morning, and has been attracting the whole countryside as spectators. Within a fortnight Mrs Gray, of Pukerau, visited Kapiti Island, and on the way back said that the waters were alive with porpoises, black fish, and killers, and it is thought that the killers must have had as their quarry the big whale which has since been given its quietus ,been submerged, until its great bulk has risen to the. surf ace under the influence of .the gases generated by putrefaction, and been washed ashore. The fishermen of Paremata are dealing with the carcass of the whale. They had already stripped some of the blubber on Sunday, and were "trying"" it down in the ' time-honour«d way. The whalebone from the great mouth of the whale is said to be worth about £BO.
