PALMERSTON RAILWAY STATION.
MR FIEJ.D RAISES OBJECTION IN HOUSE. OPPOSITION DEFEATED BY TWO TO ONE. Wellington, January 28. In discussing -the public Works Estimates last night, some opposition developed towards the proposal to deviate the railway at Palmerston North. Messrs. Field, Glenn and Edie protested against the proposal as an unwarrantable waste of public incmy. Mr Holland said no money should be spent on giving Palmerston North a better railway station while ether portions of the Dominion had none. Mr Field then moved that the vote be reduced by £IOO as an indication that the work should not ie jroceed ed with. Mr Massey said this work had Leen strongly recommended by three experts, and ,a personal inspection -satisfied him it was necessary, while the Borough Council was pressing for it to enable them to proceed with certain works which ha/d been approved by the ratepayers. He could not give an assurance ihat the wrrk would be delayed for a year* The motion was negatived by 31 to 15. The Government Railways Amendment Bill, introduced by Governor’s Message, will be discussed on Monday night. The House rose at 2.24 a.m. till 2.30 on Monday.
