MOTOR ACCIDENT.

'— - LORRY FALLS 200 FT INTO RIVER. i Through the steering gear failing at a critical moment, a motor lorry belonging to Mr J. Howard, of Levin, fell over a bank 200 feet high yesterday into the Ohau River, at the head of Gladstone Road. Air Howard was engaged carrying logs to Harvey’s, sawmill, and was returning for another load when fie mishap occurred in a narrow rocky cutting with a drop on one side down into the river. When the gearing went wrong the machine .went over the bank and fell sideways to the bottom. Mr Howard sprang from the cab as the machine was falling, and landed on the side of the bank unhurt. The motor turned: in its fall, and landed on its wheels, but the engine immediately took fire. Mr Howard scrambled down the bank and put up a desperate fight with the flames, and by means of water from the river finally succeeded in overcoming the outbreak. The cab and the rear portion was saved, hut forward of that considerable damage was done. Air i-loward than went on to the Levin Sawmilling Company’s mill for assistance, but, meantime his son Jim, aged 14, and a companion, came along and, noticing what had happened, Jim attempted to* go down to the lorry, fearing that his fathe'r was pinned in the Unfortunately he slipped over the bank and fell to the river-bed, but a moment later his father returned and rescued his son in an unconscious condition, his head being badly cut.. He soon recovered, and was motored Into town, where he received medical attention, and is now progressing, well. The lorry was insured for £IOOO, but the loss of time in renewing the machine and getting it in running again will mean a heavy loss fo the owner. CHRONIC CONSTIPATION.
