HOROWHENUA SHOW.
FULL PRIZE LIST
The • Horowheiiua Show was favoured with beautiful weather lor both days and was largely attended by visitors from . all parts of the Coast. The event was'a complete- success irom all joints of view. V ’
, me jersey entries at the show/are within two of last year’s total, ana numbered 98. Ayrsmres, however, snow a big decrease, Mr T. H. coip/man, of Ohau, being Me only exniuitor, whilst in previous years« t the Pbrirua Mental Hospital and Bros., oi Koputaroa, were presented in this breed. There is no doubt about the utility ol the .Ayrshire, and the breeders of 4he district should lose no opportunity ol keeping the breed beiore -the public by compelling at the shows, it is to be hoped that next year will see an entry representative ol the many line Merits of the district./ . Last year’s figures show that Friesians . were better re presented twelve months ago than ai the present exhibition through there being more individual exhibitors, xMs year competition is confined principally to the Central Development Farm and Mr W. Bevan, of Manakau, whose stock made a fine show, but. me admirers of the Black and .Whites, however limited may he their stock in number, should support their sectr m at the show, provided, of course,'their animals possess sufficient quality. L is pleasing to record that Registered Making Shorthorns are ! better represented .at this; show than the last, and while Mr D. K. Buchanan,, of YVai,kanae, is noticeably absent, Mr B. id Slack, ol' Otaki, is a, strong and suecessiul competitor this year, ii tlie Shorthorns were represented accordibg to/their number in This district, they would make a still better display. Another section that exceeds'last y ear'.; entries is the dairy cattle, which me a fine lot, and a feature of the show. Horn Bros., of’ Ohau, are the most successful exhibiiors, in the'class. .The competition for purebred dairy cows of any breed is another fine class, and the entry is'as good as last, year’s. In the sheep section, Romneys have jumped from 18 last year "to 82 mis year, a mosj satisiactory increase, aim those consistent exhibitprs, Messrs vveggery, of Waikanae, have met goo,, competition from ' a Levin breeder 'ir Mr ii. B. Prouse, who is exhibiting 'this year with considerable ‘ success Fat sheep show a iailing off in. number, wmch is accountable for by tin absence oi a well known compeinoi m Mr Waiter Ryder, whose name aas been successfully associated. with tilt sheep section, and particularly the tats, over a long period of years. How ever, another season may Tina lam on the list again. The farmers’ classes couiu be better'supported, in fact h should Jbe one ol the strongest sections at me show. The larmers of me district should see to- it that they are adequately represented in me future. It is satisfactory -to,-find that tfie iai cattle pens are better’ iiiied at the show than was the' case last year, and tint m spite oi the slump in stock. it it pleasing to note that) such a thing at a stumpy does not disturb the fat cat tit men to any appreciable degree wiiei. it comes to a show. As already stated, pigs are anothei division that show larger entries that, last year, and a greater number oi sx hibitors are in evidence —a most satis factory aspect of the breeding Indus try in this district.
WHAT THE iIuW£S SAY, BEAUTIFUL OHAU AYRSHIRES) Mr A. Montgomerie, the Ayrshire judge, in commenting on this section, stated that though there was not much competition, Mr T. 1 ti. Coipnian exhibited some beautilul animals, the winning animal in the lour-year cow class being a tine type. A -good pair of yearling heifers were ex] libited ny the same-towner, the first being a good type, though a bit in me shoulder, whilst the second, while on the small side, showed e ven better quality. The winning ea Ives were particularly , good, and would hold, their own anywhere in Ne’ w Zealand. ’ Mr Montgomerie said that, as a breeder of experience in Ayrshi res as well as in other breeds, he did not think, that the Ayrshires were • getting 'he consideration from dairymet a that they were entitled to. This bree d did well on any qlass of country, ai id particularly on poor country, and with .equal conditions were capable o f holding their own. with any breed, STRONG JERSEY SEC TION. ■ . i The Jersey section hadlasi . judge Mr
