SALE OF NEW ZEALAND MEAT.
MANCHESTER AS CENTRE OF DISTRIBUTION. • A Levin gentleman, whose experience of business conditions at Home extend over many years, informed a Chronicle reporter this morning that the support promised by Manchester to the proposed New Zealand meat pool was very valuable, and would go. a long wav towards the success ot the scheme. Manchester, he said, was the centre of the industrial districts of the north, which specialised in coal, iron and textiles, and the population within a 20-mile radius of Manchester Cathedral was as great, if not greater, than a similar radius from St, Pant’s Cathedral in London. Manchester was served by the Ship Canal, and liners from New Zealand could discharge their cargoes right in the city. There was no doubt, ol' its value as a distri buting centre, and in this respect and from the point of meat consumption, was superior to London, because t.be bulk of the population were engaged industrially as compared with the lee sured and commercial communities in London. The marvel was that our produce had been dumped in London for so many years, and no other big centres like Manchester exploited. In other words, New Zealand had been catering for London with one-eighth of the English population, whilst seven-eighths have been neglected. If Manchester -was selected as the distri' buting centre, .our informant said he was certain that it would prove more satisfactory from the producers’ point of view, and to the Dominion meat interests generally, from the certain increase in consumption of our meat.
