SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FIRST MEETING IN NEW YEAR. The first meeting of the Council in the New Year took place on Tuesday evening, and was attended by the Mayor and Crs. Hook, Butt, Hyde, Murray, Richardson and Fargher. SANITARY MATTERS. Cr. Hook, chairman of ..the Sanitary Committee, reported that the contractor was not carrying out his work in a satisfactory way at the depot, and something would have to be done to improve matters. .. The Mayor moved that the Sanitary Committee interview the contractor and arrange with him to carry out the sanitary contract in a more satisfactory maimer, and to see about another site to next meeting. The-'mction was seconded by Cr. Hyde and carried. SURPLUS BOULDERS. Cr. Hook asked what the Council was going to do with the boulders leu over after the footway contract in the northern end of Piimmer Terrace. The Council could use them to fill in the roads in different places. Crs. Hyde and Murray considered the Council should use them for the roads, ' and not leave them in the street, where they wiould be in the way. The Mayor said to pick "them up and cart them to the Council yard and then back to the streets when wanted was too troublesome and expensive. The boulders could be spread out where they were and blinde.d. He moved to that effect and the motion was carried. PAYMENT AGREED TO. The Mayor reported, on behalf of the committee appointed to inquire into the last time-sheet submitted by the men employed on the street improvements at the northern end of Piimmer Terrace. After going fully into the matter the committee had recommended that the Council pay out on the time-sheets submitted. The Council decided to act accordingly. Cr. Butt: Labour wins. QUESTION OF A FLOODGATE. Cr. Hyde drew attention to the use of the flood gate at Dyer’s during flood time, and asked whether the Council was going to do anything that would put things on a more satisfactory footing. Cr. Richardson said the whole trouble was caused by the Horowhenua County Council, which had putin a drain and shifted Ihe course of the creek. The Mayor suggested seeing Mr ■ Byers and ascertaining if some arrangement could not be come to with him 1o take such action that would prevent the road being flooded in future. On Cr Murray’s motion, seconded by Cr. Hyde, it was decided that the Roads Committee inspect the floodgate and meet Mr Byers with the object atated. RANGER WANTED. The Mayor stated that no one had applied for the position of ranger, but a dog lax collector had been appointed and Avas now at work. Cr. Murray said the' stray cattle nuisance was very bad, and the main street footways AA-ere in a disgraceful condition at times SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL. The Mayor stated that the ladies had charge of the memorial, and Mrs Evans, the secretary, was calling a meeting at an early date. Cr. Fargher said, in regard to the form of memorial, that an.arch to the school or any other such ins^u- * tion had been adopted by some tOAvns, and he thought it a very suitable memorial. Cr. Hyde urged, the necessity of getting on with the work and haying something done. There Avas too much delay. The Mayor said the ladies ..AVere calling a meeting soon, and the memorial would be pushed on. “ BEAUTIFYING WORK Cr. Hyde inquired abuut the proposed beautifying work. What Avas the intention now, seeing there Avere some funds in hand? The Mayor said that the Society could go on Avith the kerbing of the ground. Cr. Murray pointed out that if Avould be useless to do the kerbing or fencing till the ploughing was done, and the ploughing should be done in the autumn and allowed to lie over the winter. Cr. Butt pointed out that the Council had promised to do the kerbing. and the Beautifying Society should not be asked to do the work. Cr. Hyde said that was so. The Mayor stated that there Avas no reason why the Society could not go on Avitli the fencing, but Cr. Murray pointed out that it would be far better to do the ploughing first and the • fencing aftenvards. The Mayor said possibly Cr. Murray was right, and it would be as Avell to let the work of ploughing stand over till a suitable time arrived.

j THE WATER SCHEME. ; The Mayor stated that it was time < the Engineer reported on the water scheme, as he was requested to do some time ago, and the Mayor moved that, the Engineer be written to on the matter. The motion was seconded by Cr. ! Richardson and carried, j GENERAL. < Accounts to the amount of £44 14/8 < ' | were passed for payment. t In reply tb the Mayor, the Town j Clerk stated that no reply had been j received from the County Engineer re i meeting the Roads Committee in reference to the cartage of county metal over the borough streets. The Clerk was instructed to write the En- ; gineer again, asking him to meet the . Committee. I The Mayor was empowered to engage a ranger as soon as possible.
