A deputation, introduced by Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., and consisting of Messrs. R. T. Bell (chairman) and A. H. Grant ..(clerk) of the newly-consti-tuted Manawatu-Oroua. River Board, waited upon the Minister for Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. Downie Ste-i wart), to present a petition, signed by the majority of the landowners ofthe district, praying that the River Board be established over an extent of thirty miles from Longburn approaching towards Foxton. The Minister promised to have the matter looked into immediately; and stated that, if everything was found in order, and he was satisfied about it, be would take the necessary steps to comply with the prayer of the petitioners. During the prize-giving celebrations at a suburban school in Christchurch a very funny incident happened. The chairman of the committee had just started his remarks with the words, “We have just reached another stage in the history of the chair on which the headmaster was sitting on the platform collapsed and precipitated that worthy dignitary on to liis back on the ground. Needless to say, the scholars received the happening with roars of laughter, which were intensified when the chairman remarked, “Mr just did that on purpose, to put you all In a good humour.”
