BAD LANGUAGE PUNISHED.
M Tuesday morning last David xxioud porter appeared at the Sh&ntx police court, oeiore Messrs. Murcn, opencer and Taylor, J.P.’s, on a urge oi being urunk and disorderly, d using ohscene language m Bailee street. Accused was defenueu and,- pleaded not guilty. Constable McGregor stated tha irter called at the police station on :ee occasions complaining oi taxi i’vers not using the correct stand, d asking that they he removed, ltness immediately went to mvestite on the first occasion of defendant 11 mg, hut iound no taxis there. On s second visit defendant was drunk d made use of bad language. H 6 is advised to leave the station and go ime. Outside the gate he continued use bad language and was then rested, the time being 8 p.m. Constable Shannon stated that he w defendant a few minutes atterards, and also three and a-hali mrs later, and he was drunk on both casioiis. V Several witnesses were, called by e defence, and stated that they had ea Porter between 7 and 8 p.m., and id been talking to him. He then apIBtod quite sober. On toilg questioned by the police, }fendamSaitl-iie was sober, but adiftted having had"several drinks dur ie ;,he afternoon and., evening. He ight have had six or more. He rank “Johnny Walker’s” whisky. He ime to the police station to complain f the taxi-drivers using the wrong and, and the constable appeared to ike no notice. This made him amoved. He admitted using a little bad mguage, but not that on the charge leet. He had got outside the gate -hen Constable McGregor ran him in. Vheruarrested he saw red and hardly new: what took place, jbe Justices considered the evidence a the charge of being drunk and disr&Sfly was not sufficient to warrant ewfviction, and gave defendant the eneftt .of the doubt. On the charge f using obscene language he was onvicted .-and fined £3, in default 14 ays’ imprisonment.
