THE FESTIVE SEASON.
COUNTY CHAIRMAN’S FELICITATIONS. At tile conclusion or the business of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday, the chairman (Cr. Monk) said that was their last meeting of the year, and he had pleasure in extending to his brother councillors and the staff the usual festive greetings. The past year had been a somewhat anxious one at times, but he hoped that after the New Year things would
brighten up. He believed in looking at the optimistic side. Pie expressed the opinion that the people of this country were sitting down waiting for something to turn up.
Cr. Ryder: A great mistake. The Chairman went on to say that things did not look too bright as regards the producers. Values were being gradually reduced, and the producer got the reduced values first. “I admit,” he said, ‘‘that the prospects are not bright, but we should not Jose hope. Things will right themselves in time.” Touching on the Council’s work during the year, the Chairman said that they had not made as much progress as they could have wished, but they were experiencing the great work of reconstruction after the war, and the difficulties that such work involved. Under these conditions most local bodies were marking time. What their Council had done during the year, however, had, been done well. Their meetings had been harmonious always, and for that he thanked the councillors and extended his warmest greetings to them. ,Cr. Harkness reciprocated the good wishes of the Chairman'. The fact that some people went - about saying things were bad kept the spirits of I he others down. They should change their tactics and take a better outlook, keep a stiff upper lip, and things would undoubtedly improve. Cr. Ryder also added his thanks for the chairman’s good wishes. Mr Goldsmith replied on behalf of the staff. He considered the Council had done fairly well during the year in carrying on out of revenue when other Councils have had to go to the money market for what they wanted. This was all the more creditable when it was stated that the Horowhenua County was not heavily rated when compared with other bodies. He expressed the staff’s appreciation of the chairman’s greetings.
