RETRENCHMENT.
A FEILDING RESOLUTION. At a representative meeting held at Feilding on Friday night, the following resolution was carried, on the motion of Mr J. G. Cobbe: — . That this meeting of representatives of the producing and mercantile interests of Feilding “aha district desires to most respectfully impress upon the Government the unprecedented and extraordinary’necessity at present existing for the most drastic curtailment of the cost of Public Service and of- Government. While believing that the proposed reduction of salaries is a step in the right direction, this meeting is strongly of opinion that the reductions should be graduated and cease at £260. As an additional aid towards lessening the heavy burden of taxation at present pressing upon the public, the adoption of the following suggestions is urged upon the Government(a) That such departments of State as the different branches of Insurance and other Departments be amalgamated.
(b) That the expenditure upon Defence be reduced to a sum in keeping with the needs and ability of the Dominion.
(c) That comparatively useless departments, such as the Board of Trade, be abolished.
(d) That the Agent-General’s office be re-organised, placed upon a business footing, and made of real value to the producing and commercial interests of the Dominion. , That this motion is intended to strengthen the hands of the Government.
