SHANNON SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL.

A MARDI GRAS PROPOSED. The manner in which matters are proceeding in regard to the Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial was the subject of comment at 'the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday evening, when Cr. Hyde asked who had the memorial in hand The Mayor said a committee of ladies was in charge, with Mrs Evans as secretary. Cr. Hyde suggested that something should be done to raise further funds to help the matter along, and thought that he could promote a Mardi Gras in a few months’ time to get some money in. One was run in Levin that resulted in £I4OO being raised, and at Foxton £BOO. had been netted. He could get all the particulars from the Mayor of Levin. The speaker said it \va.s high time that some definite steps were taken, and he did not think the subscription lists were at all satisfactory. They were simply put in a shop window and left there. A councillor said he thought the heading might have been better worded. The Mayor: If ‘people won’t give with that wording they won't give at all. Cr. Spencer slated that he believed there were 50 per cent of the people about Shannon who were against memorials. The people who were against it surprised him —he had never thought of them opposing the proposal. The Mayor: We will put it up. anyhow, if we have to pay for it ourselves. He added that if it was a matter of canvassing for subscriptions he would be prepared to do his share. Cr. Spence#* said he did not know how a Mardi Gras would get on. The people in Shannon wqre not the same as in Levin. The Mayor asked that a canvass be made, and he would take a list and see how he got on for a start. It was decided to leave the matter in the Mayor’s hands in ' the meantime'.
