SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held on Tuesday evening, and was attended by the Mayor and Crs. 'Hyde, Richardson, Fargher, Gardner, Spencer and Hook. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr J .T. Bovis wrote accepting the terms offered by the Council regarding the lease of the reserve for a period of 12 months for the sum of £lO. A cheque fhe amount was enclosed.—Received. Mr H. A. ’Scott applied for permission to erect a smoke-house at the rear of the section occupied by his premises in Plimmer Terrace.—Granted, provided the smokehouse is erected 40ft from any other building. The Medical Health Officer reported that three buildings in Nathan’s Terrace were in an insanitary condition, and called on the Council to serve notice on the owners to carry out certain structural alterations. It was decided that the notices be forwarded to the owners in accordance with the Health Officer’s directions-. THE RUBBISH TIP. The Mayor stated that Mr Gardner, owner of the rubbish tip stte, had spoken to him about the tip and his desire that the Council’s tenure of it should cease. Mr Gardner had disputed the dates of the Council’s lease. Cr. Gardner said he coulcl • hardly do that. The Mayor said Cr. Murray had been deputed„,to see Mr Gardner about the tip, and they would have to wait till that councillor was present to hear his report. Erection of boundary fence. The Mayor reported that Mrs Barker had offered to erect the houndary fence between her property and the Counil’s reserve. If the Council paid 30s to cover cost of material, Mr Barker would undertake the work. Cr. Richardson stated that this mat--1 ’ ter had been referred to Cr. Butts, who was unable to be present, and some one else should be appointed to j see that the matter was attended to. On Cr. Hook’s motion, it was decided that the Reserves Committee in-; terview Mrs Barker, with power to act. THE CEMETERY PATHS. Cr. Hyde asked TT the Council could undertake the work of retarring the paths in the cemetery. Was it in a position to do so?. The Mayor: We can’t do it till after March 31. Cr. Richardson proposed going to the public for assistance. He was sure those owning plots in the cemetery' would help. Ct: Spencer suggested that before a permanent job was done the paths should be properly graded. Cr. Fargher supported Cr. Richardson's suggestion to> ask the . plot owners for assistance. This was the practice followed in some places in the South Island, with very good results. The Mayor said that the Cemetery Committee should make an estimate of what was wanted and then the Finance Committee could go into the financial position and see what could be done. Cr. Gardner said that trouble had been • caused in the past by the' tar • surface cracking and allowing the weeds to get through and eventually break up the surface. He considered that'£2s a. year could be collected to do this work, and he believed that this would allow one tar treatment a year. On Cr. Gardner’s motion, seconded by Cr. Richardson, it was decided that, the Reserves and Roads Committee inspect the cemetery and report at next meeting. OVERDUE RATES. P Cr. Richardson moved 7 and Cr. Spencer seconded, that all rates be paid by January 20, 1922, otherwise a penalty of 10 per cent would be added. The motion was carried. FLOOD REPORTS.

** ft, Mr Newman,"M.P., forwarded a letter he had received from the Post-master-General with reference to the question of advising Shannon of the presence of flood water in the Manawatu River at Woodville. Arrangements had now been made, the Minister stated, for the transmission of flood warnings. The Railway Department’s' bridgekeeper at Ngawapurua would act as river reporter during Ins working hours, and would advise the Woodvilio postmaster of the state of river. The postmaster would in turn telegraph warnings to offices lowed down the river.

The letter was received, councillors stating that the arrangement was quite satisfactory. Cr. Richardson stated that the telegrams were not alwyas posted up by the local post office. This was important, as residents desired to know what was the state of the river when heavy rains fell. It was decided to ask the postmaster to notices posted up when tftos come to Hand in future,
