The total of 106 bacon pigs was trucked from Shannon last week. Owing to the heavy losses of - benzine through theft, principally "at flag stations, the Railway Department is now having rope nets to cover the trucks, the tie rope being "sealed. After going fully into the question of showing “The Eastern Charm” at Levin, the committee have decided,' in view of the great expense that would be incurred, and the lack of encouragement from Levin's prominent citizens, to abandon the idea. A considerable amount of petty thieving is reported in Shannon, some of the cupboards in New Town being 'visited on Saturday night. Messrs. A. and L. Seifert have had approximately 400 acres of their swamp land sown down in grass recently, the flax having died .out. It is considered that the time is not. far distant when the bulk of the swamp will be sub-divided into small dairy farms. Hall Caine’s new book, “The Master of Man."—At Dunckley’s.

Mrs Walter Kirkland, formerly of j Shannon and now of Foxton, was a visitor to Shannon yesterday.

The Shannon Borough Council is making good progress with the construction of the footway in Plimmer Terrace. Although the work is a costly one, the Council is carrying it out on revenue, thereby cutting out having to make special financial provision for the job.

The fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council takes place this evening.

It is reported that Mr Hone McMillan has disposed of his successful picture business in Shannon to a local purchaser.

The decrease in the cost of living for the current six monthly statistical period is estimated by the Arbitration Court, at from 7s to 9s per week for a typical wage-earner with a wife and two children. This estimate was announced by Mr Justice Frazer in the course of the freezing workers’ dispute at Christchurch.

Miss Esther E. Ongley has been admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court at Wellington. The Hereford-Shorthom cross bullock of huge size which was exhibited at Wanganui Show by Mr G. F. Moore, ol' Kai Iwi, was officially weighed yesterday on the weighbridge at Wanganui Railway Station, in the presence of an official gathering, which included the Mayor and officials of the Wanganui Agricultural Association. The bullock turned the scale at 2915 lb. It was anticipated that a new world’s record figures would be established' but such proved not to he the case.

During the hearing of the alleged bookmaking case at- the Christchurch Supreme Court, his Honour showed some anxiety as to, whether the jury understood what a “double chart” was; but counsel assured his Honour that these documents were not so rarer and that it might be assumed with, safety that members of the jury knew what they were. Mr F. D. Sargent, one of the counsel appearing for- accused, remarked that a few days before he had seen a “double chart” lying on the footpath in front of the police station, but had not picked it up, because of the liability to be accused of following the business of a bookmaker. Cater the Crown Prosecutor (Mr A. T. Donnelly) remarked that-, owing to the unjustifiable timidity of counsel for the defence, they did not have a printed chart to produce as an exhibit.
