Epitaph’s time of 47 l-ssec. lor the Welcome Stakes is the fastest since 1897, in which year Conqueror ran the four furlongs in 47 sec., but as the latter was assisted by a gale possibly the performance of Epitaph is the better. The progeny of Martian have created a wonderful record in connection with the New Zealand Cup, lor’ since his daughter Warstep dead-heated with Indigo for first place in 1914 the following winners of our principal handicaps claim Martian as their sire: 1916, Ardenvohr; 1917, Menelaus; 1918, Sasanof; 1919, Vagabond; 1921, Royal Star. When'one considers that the record is connected with a handicap run over a two-mile course the achievement is most remarkable. Whilst touching on the subject of staying, the following may be interesting: At Ardlethan (N.S.W.) races a few weeks ago, a Sydney mare won the Publicans’ Purse three times before being declared the winner. There were three starters, Coolante being favourite, Irene Murillo next and Wai* Colonel outsider. The starter had a long piece of elastic as a, barrier, and the first time the horses raced through it. The three houses started off and then turned to come back. Someone shouted “Go on,” ancl a»way they went. Coolante won from Irene Murillo, The horses returned to the saddling paddock. The' stipendiary declared it no race, all bets off. The horses were accordingly lined up, and again there was a false start, Coolante again winning. The horses were ordered to go to the post ja third time. Coolante again won. The race was over a distance of six furlongs,' and altogether the horses raced two miles and a-quarter for—what do you think—£B to the winner and a silvermounted whip to the winning rider! Some sport this.
