BOROUGH COUNCIL WAKES UP
(i’o the Editor.) Sir,—ln the Shannon News of last Friday’s date there appeared a report of the meeting of the Shannon Borough Council, and I noticed that some of the wording ran thus: "It was decided to write the School Committee asking that the flagpole be put in order and to have the flag hoisted cm suitable occasions.” Now, sir, the Shannon Borough Council must be waking up to notice that, the flag-pole was out of order, because they are not in the habit of noticing things of far greater importance, and, among other things they failed to notice was the Shannon School Committee’s report in your issue of the 14th October, which stated that. “Some repairs to the flagpole were left to the secretary to attend to.” As there are no ship * chandlers in Shannon from whom to purchase the necessary requirements for this work, such as a cap with pulleys complete, and halyards for raising, and lowering the flag, some delay was caused conse quently, and after repairs had been effected, a coat of paint to. finish off. Yes, 'Mr Editor, you know all about this, but does the Council know, and take these facts into consideration? Anyhow, what business has the Council to dictate to the Committee as to what it shall do in the management
of the School affairs. They must have thought this work would not receive consideration because there are no Jingoes on the Committee, but, sir, there is a . vast difference between Jingoes and loyalists. As the Council did not write to the Committee after deciding to do so, their remarks through the press are very misleading to the general public, therefore humiliating to the Committee; and on that account I request, on behalf of the Committee, that the Council tender an apology through the columns of the Shannon News, and hope that body will put its own house in order and cater for' the needs of the people, instead of finding fault with flags and flagpoles and the School Committee generally. —I am, etc., WM. CARLYLE, Hon. Secretary, For the Shannon School Committee.
