SPORTING
THE HOROWHENUA MEETING. The showers yesterday afternoon and evening have greatly improved the track at the Levin course and as the weather lias cleared to-day, the prospects for a fine day for the meeting are good. A big contingent of horses were worked at the course this morning. Others, will arrive in Levin by (lie north and south trains to-day and will be given a spin this afternoon. American Beauty and the two-year-olds Bravato and Oereo', of C. Milieu’s stable, were exercised. The first-nam-ed moved well in a sprint over a short course. Tari, a Cup candidate, moved attractively in a couple of circuits and was accompanied by. Kail, the pair galloping well. /A. McConnoivs team, Paphian, Prince Ferouz and Pleasure were amongst, the active brigade. Paphian is going as well as ever alter his recent mishap. Toddy, who has become a steady performer over obstacles, was given two circuits at half-pace. Over the fast furlong he was given his head and rattled home at a great bat. The YVaikaranga gelding looks a much-im-proved horse to what lie was when previously here. Merry Knight, and Semper Idem sprinted over three furlongs and completed the latter portion of I lie mile at three-quarter pace. Semper Idem is a sister to that good performer Antwerp and very like him in action. Merry Knight is a Juvenile Handicap candidate and shaped well. M. Gardner's pair of two-year-olds were given light work over a couple of circuits of the track.
Gay Boy with his stable mate Reeherehe, worked together. The latter is a fitly by Bonlform and will start in the two-year-old race.
Goolwa and Country Life were also among the visitors and D'Aubepines was given a couple of rounds on the plough. Visiting owners and trainers were very pleased at the condition of the local track and considered it equal to anything in the province. Eleven have paid up in the hurdle race and, backers have plenly of choice for their fancy. It is interesting to note that Nobleman, the winner of many good races on the flat "is in the field. Gay Boy is a likely sort and Toddy has been in winning vein lately. This pair should he irt the running to-morrow. In the Welter, Hack there are 15 acceptors, Helen Rufus, a member of F. Carmont’s Foxton team, i.s a speedy sort, and Kail is another that should run a good race, whilst Admiration and Kyoto are a useful pair that should be well worth watching.....
The big field of 26 are in the Maiden which from appearances is a pretty open race. Rugby is reported to he go ing well and Princess Fran and Pan ache should'make the race interesting. Another good field of 11 runners is on th£ card in the Levin Hack Handf cap and among thein several who have been in the money of late. Celmisia is one and Kikini got home first at Carterton the other day whilst Rose of Athens ran a second at the same meeting. These should be in the fighting line in this event.
In the big event of ihe day, the Horowhenua Cup, 14 have paid up, Kilrush being top-weight with 8.6. Tari who won at Waipawa lately, and Detroit and American Beauty at Otaki, have got recent fdrm behind them, whilst Red Bob has also- been in the limelight of late. The class of horses right through is good and the race has a very open appearance. This is the first year the Juvenile Handicap has appeared on the local g H'ogramme, hut the support accorded it by owners is most encouraging. There are 11 youngsters engaged and they should make a good show. Twenty-one horses are in the McDonald Memorial 'Welter, and should give hackers a deal of picking. Astinome,.Railand, Nursing Sister and As(erina are all likely sorts and there are others among the lighter-weighted brigade that might, upset the pot. The final heat, the Hokio Hack, has attracted a field of 25. Paphian should make things interesting although he has a good load of 0.2- on his back. Gallia at last year’s meeting showed she is endowed with a good deal ot pace, and Lord Usk and King’s Armour were both successful runners a little time back.
