HOROWHENUA A. AND P. ASSOCIATION.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the committee of the Hoi'owhenua A. and P. Association was held on Saturday afternoon, the president (IVIr A. McLeavey) presiding over an attendance of 21 members. Messrs. G. Sievers, Levin (daily cattle), J. McFarland, Feilding (pigs), K. W. Leighton, Marton (fat sheep and cattle), H. E. Watson, Christchurch (Jerseys), J. Hodges, Wanganui (Milking Shorthorns), C. F. Vallance, Masterton (horses and competitions), wrote agreeing to act as judges at the forthcoming show. Mr H. Gill, Melbourne, wrote stating that he would be back in New Zea land by Christmas, and asked if the Association would reserve the privilege of the merry-go-ronnd rights for him at, the show in January. It was stated that Mr Lethaby, who conducted a merry-go-round at the Palmerston Show, would be coming to .the Horowhenua Show, and it was decided to allow both to operate and provide amusement for the children. Mr W. Hunter, secretary of the Milking Shorthorn Association, advised that the Association had allob ted the sum of £5 5s as a points prize in the Milking Shorthorn classes at the forthcoming show on the same conditions as obtained last year. The entries must either be registered cattle or eligible for registration, and the classes must be judged by an official ' inspector of the Association.—Received with thanks. The question of the Porirua Mental Hospital not intending to compete at the next show was brought up, and Mr C. I. Harkness moved, and Mr R. L. Horn seconded, and it was carried, that the member for the district be written to and asked to bring the matter before the Agricultural. Department, as it was in the interests of both the Hospital and the Horowhenna Association that the insttution should continue exhibiting. It was pointed out, by members that in past years the Hospital had always been a successful exhibitor, and the Horowhenua show was its home show. Moreover, the success achieved here had helped the sale of its blood stock, whilst the presence of its entries had been a help tc the show. The Board of Agriculture, in a cir cular letter in reference to the estab lishment of boys’ and girls’ agricul tural clubs, drew attention to the good results that had already been obtained in the United States and Canada, also in Otago, Taranaki and other parts of New Zealand, and with a view to furthering the ?novement, the Board was circularising A. and P. As sociations, the Farmers’ Union and other organisations interested in agri culture, and asking them to unite and assist in forming further clubs. Prizes could be given for the best animal or produce exhibits by the girls and boys belonging to these clubs. To make.a successful start inquired a considerable amount of organisation. Where these clubs exist the parents soon saw the benefits of the training, for nothing brought before the young mind in such a degree the importance of care and system in the growth of animals and produce, and nothing was more calculated to awaken interest in these pursuits than the rearing of a prize animal or the raising of a crop that would take a prize. The letter was received.
