W.E.A.
Editor.) Sir, —Mr Kelly has got off the track on to a new stunt. I object to follow and exp rain all the matter that Mr Kelly choses to raise in your columns. As to the W.E.A., Mr Kelly knows quite well that the use of the room should have been paid lor in advance, .which is the rule of the Council. It should not require the sending of an account. The W.E.A. knew the charge, and the nuniber of times the room had been used. The W.E.A. was never backward in looking for the Council’s subsidy. That could be remembered. As to the account of the Railway Department being allowed to stand over for three years, if I am to blame for this, Mr Kelly is equally to /blame, as he was a member of the Council 1 and the Finance Committee along with myself; but there is this to my credit, that I discovered the omission and had the amount- collected. What has Mr Kelly to put to his credit in the matter? The truth is, neither Mr Kelly nor myself is to blame. The keeping
) of flie borough books and the auditing of them is not- the work- of die I Mayor and councillors. The error
j in question occurred through the ac count of the Government- departments ! not being carried forward by the then j /'own Clerk, and if was only by-, test- ; in g flie accuracy of the revenfie of j the borough, as it appeared in the , books, that I suspected a shortage fn , the sanitary funds. This led me to j investigate, and the error was discovered. I might add the present Town Clerk is in no way to blame, do not intend to follow Mr Kelly
further. I will leave the people of I Shannon to judge me and the alleged unfulfilled pledges.—l am, etc., j WM. MURDOCH.
