PROPOSED COURT SITTINGS. A letter was received from the Hon. Mr Lee, Minister of Justice, y stating that he had gone into'the matter of regular sittings of the S.M. Court at Shannon, which question had been referred to him at the instigation of the Council. He regretted to say that he was unable to meet the wishes of the Council, as there was insufficient business in Shannon to warrant Court sittings. The Mayor pointed out that places like Woodville and Eketahuna, which were smaller than Shannon, had Court sittings, although they both were near larger centres where there were weekly sittings of the Court. He did not think they should let the matter drop. Other '.councillors agreed, and it was decided to write Mr E. Newman, M.P., stating that the Council was ‘not satisfied with the reply received, and asking him to pursue the matter further with the Minister. THE RUBBISH HP PROPERTY. Mr K. Gardner wrote informing the Council that it had not kept to the agreement entered into when it leas-. ed the rubbish tip site from him. The Council was to erect a gate, and when it became necessary, pipes were .to be put in at the bottom of the hill to let the water away. He asked the Council to discontinue the use of the tip and to remit rent due. The matter had come up at a special meeting* when Cr. Murray was authorised to interview Mr Gardner, but as Cr. Murray was not present, the matter was held over. It was pointed out, however, that the Counci} had erected a gate at the tip, but there was no necessity to put in the pipes yet. As regards the rent, it was not yet due, but would be paid on due date. Hook stated that he would endeavour to get Mr Barber to put a mob of sheep on the Recreation Ground to keep the grass down so that the ground would be clear for the cricketers. It was stated that the reserve lease expired at the end of October, and the reserve was not re-let. ' » The Mayor suggested that the reserve be offered to Mr Bovis at £lO per* year, and that this sum be used as a subsidy to assist any expenditure . the cricketers may go to in improving the reserve. The Mayor moved accordingly, and the motion was seconded by Cr. Gardener and carried. CEMETERY MATTERS. Cr. Hyde,' chairman of the Cemetery Committee, reported that he had had the weeds taken out of'the paths in the cemetery, an'd some of the paths had been tarred, but mope tar was wanted.# The tank at the cemetery was a great convenience to visitors, and should be put in good order. Cr. Richardson asked what was going to be done with the cemetery. Was the Council going on with the work of improving it, or allow it to go back to its old state of neglect? The Mayor said the best thing was for the Cemetery Committee to have a* look at the cemetery and bring down a, report at next- meeting. He reminded the committee, however, that the report musk not be too elaborate, v as funds were not too plentiful. * 1 Cr. Richardson asked what became J of the fees paid for plots. Surely there was some money in hand? 0 The Mayor said the fees were paid in to the credit of the cemetery; but there was really not much income from this source. Cr.
