THE LEVIN MARKET.

DAIRY HEIFERS SELL WELL

Tlie weekly sale at Levin only

brought out a moderate entry in all classes and prices on the whole were about on last week’s level. Among the cattle, yearling to 18-months uauy heilers sold well, especially Jerseys or those with the Jersey cross. One nice-looking Jersey of this class brought £8 2s, alter good competition, and others £7 ss, £6, £5, down to £1 and 16s for low-conditioned crossbreds. The inquiry for heilers for next season, while not what it was twelve months ago, is good considering the times. For store stock the market is still weak, and cows of this variety were quitted as low as 10s. Fat bullocks made up to £7 9s, which is a better price than has been ruling for some weeks. Cow beef reached last week’s figure, £5, and the competition for fat cattle, was better than for the last few sales. Pigs were not so numerous as at the previous sale, but the prices ranged no higher than last week’s values, at which rates most of the lines were cleared. Although weaners are not selling so freely as two months back, £1 per head can still be got, but 1 they have to be good to reach thaty The sheep section was small, but the entries forward were quite sufficient for buyers’ requirements, and the sales made were at late rates.

Pigs.—Weaners 14s, 15s and 16s for medium, to 18s 6d and £1 for good, well-grown sorts; stores 25s to 25s 60 for small, to 35s to £2 ,1s and £2 2s for best; porkers (light), £2 Is to £2 8s up'to £2 15s, £2 17s 6d, £3 and £3 ss.

Cattle.—Fat bullocks £7 9s, fat cows £5, 2-year Hereford steers £2 15s, -store cows 10s to 15s and £1; yearling heifers 16s for poor low-conditioned to '£4 ss, £4 17s 6d for Jersey cross tip to £6, £7 5s and £8 2s for good Jerseys. Bulls were hard to quit at 5s for -old animals, whilst others reached 30s, and young good-class beasts made up to £5.

In sheep, light fat shorn wethers brought 14s 6d, woolly wethers 15s to 15s 9d and 16s. Only a comparatively small entry was forward.
