On Wednesday afternoon a large number oi bowiers and .their wives and inends gathered at the Shannon green lor tne opening day. The weamer was all mat could be desired, and the green, apart lrom being a little heavy alter the recent rain, was perfect, and reflected great credit on the green committee. Its condition was lavourahiy commented upon by the visitors who .were present lrom Levin and Foxton, there being two teams from Levin and three from Foxton. Mr J. Murray, in a short speech, welcomed the visitors, and in outlining the progress the club had made, said that two or three years ago the membership was about 20. To-day the number had reached over 50. The new pavilion, which they were opening that day, added not only to the beauty of the grounds, but would he of great and lasting convenience to the members of the club. The pavilion had been made possible to a very large extent by the enthusiasm shown by the members’ wives, who had, by their work and interest, made the recent ball a great success and had helped the club, both from a social and financial aspect, for which he felt sure every member present was grateful. Mr Lancaster, for the Levin Club, 'congratulated the local club on their rapid progress, and felt sure that its members would hold no small place in the bowling world. Mr Bryant, of Foxton, also gave a brief address, and stated that it would be a pleasant day for him when he could see the Foxton green in the same order as the one that was before them. Every rink was filled, and the afternoon’s play was keen and interesting. A dainty afternoon tea supplied by the ladies was greatly appreciated. In the evening a dance was held in the Druids’ Hall. M» George Quarrie acted , as M.C., and Mr Spencer supplied the music, ektras being played by Mr> R. Merwood. The evening proved to be a fitting climax to a pleasant day, all present being unanimous that it had been a day and evening pleasantly spent.
