What the , Masterton Times said about an unfortunate Incident m connection with the hoisting ox the winning numbers alter the running of die Opakr Handicap at the 1 late meeting: The placed horses passed the post in the following order: 7 Kilgour, 4 Printemps, 10 Esperauce. To the great astonishment of the crowd, the judge (Mr Ulic Shannon) hoisted the numbers 5,4, 10 —No-. S being Kilrush, which had not run into a place, and which also was carrying entirely distinct colours from Kilgour. For a while the crowd was silent; then a mild demonstration commenced. The clerk of the course brought Kilgour and his rider (J. Barry) to the judge’s box, but the number of Kilrush still remained on top: A bandsman then climbed up on to the judge’s box and placed No. 7 (Kilgour) on top, in place of No. 5, a procedure which met with cheers from the crowd. It appeared as if the judge had attempted to get the nuimbers down to rectify his error, but the sliding apparatus would not work .properly. The incident was unfortunate for Mr Shannon, as his -judging was very satisfactory.
