SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, the Mayor and Crs. Butt, Gardner, Hyde, Murray, Spencer and Fargher being present. THE TELEPHONE SERVICE. Correspondence was received from the Postmaster-General, through Mr Newman, M.P., dealing with direct telephone communication with Wellington, and pointing out that a direct wire could not be considered, the average time of waiting at Shannon being only seventeen minutes. , Many of the councillors considered the average time much longer. . Cr. Fargher staled that sometimes he. had to wait all day, but a good deal of the delay was thought to be made by having to .go through other bureaus. It was decided to get further, particulars frorii the local post office, and deal further with the matter later. A GENERAL CLEAN-UP. AS A SANITARY MEASURE. The question of sickness in the district was mentioned by the Mayor, and it was considered that a general clean-up ' about the dwellings was necessary, all householders to be notified to that effect. In some cases of long-standing the owners are . to be prosecuted if the matter is not attended to immediately. THE RUBBISH-TIP RAT. AND RECENT COMPLAINTS. While dealing with the subject, the Mayor said that he had expected a letter from the County Council regarding the rubbishXip, but had had none so far. He read a report from the News on the subject, and said that this was the first intimation that the Council had regarding any complaint. Cr. Spencer /£aid he had inspected the tip quite recently, and at that time there was nothing offensive about it in any way. The Mayor: The ’ County Engineer must have a great eye for rats. He said, there seemed to he a lot about. They must be quiet nbt to run away when his car comes along. Cr. Hycje. considered the matter: should not be left in doubt, and that the roadman should inspect the tip and if there was any offensive matter it should be sprinkled with kerosene and burnt. He moved to that effect. Cr. Fargher seconded, and the motion was carried. " \ A CONCRETE BRIDGE. Cr. Spencer reported that he had had an interview with Mr Edwards, the Borough Engineer., regarding thebridge over the stream in Graham Street. ■ The;, estimated cost of concrete wafs .only- £l7 inore than wood. The Engineer pointed out that the erosion with a wooden bridge would he great, and no doubt would be costly in the long run.Cr. Fargher moved, and Cr. Butt seconded, that tenders be called lor a concrete bridge immediately.—Carried. * THE HOUSING PROBLEM. The question of building a cottage and at the same time procuring the money for the purchase of' the. property now leased from Mr J. S. Wilkinson, was discussed, and if was left with the Mayor to ascertain the best means of raising the money, the option to purchase not being a great way off. THE SANITARY CONTRACT. Complaints were made regarding the work ol the sanitary contractor by the Mayor, and the contractor is to he requested to rectify same. (' TENDERS TO BE CALLED. The Council gave instructions for tenders to ,-be called for dog collars and sanitary pans. .J ' RANGER RESIGNS. . Mr Dalziell forwarded his resignation as ranger, as he considered lie would not be able to do the work for some time after his present illness.— Accepted with regret,, and new ranger to be appointed. . I ' FINANCE.-"'. ! Accounts totalling £43 14s 4d were passed for payment. A sum of £BO ! 17s lOd has been collected since last j meeting. j
