To the conference of the New Zealand Counties’ Association yesterday the Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister for Public Works, who attended with members of the Good Roads Association, explained some of the provisions of the Highways Bill. The Minister expressed his regret at not being able to issue a draft of the Bill until it had been submitted to the Prime Minister. The Hon. M- Coates gave an interesting, and instructive review of the bill, after which there was considerable discussion. ' Eventually the conference carried a. resolution opposing “both on principle and experience’’ the proposals to take away from local authorities the control of main roads and centralise the authority.
