A NOVEL ENTERTAINMENT
TO RAISE FUNDS FOR BEAUTIFYING. It, is gratifying to, learn that Cr. Hyde, who has been endeavouring, by direction of the Borough Council, to form a party of local artists to put on an entertainment in the interests of the Beautifying Society, has met with considerable success. .It is already apparent that before long local residents will have the opportunity Of witnessing an entertainment of a class that has never yet been seen in Shannon. Mrs Parkhouse, who is at present teaching a number of the local children French, classical, ballet and solo dancing for the concert to be held on August 26 in connection with the Catholic Church, has undertaken' the management of a grand Fantasia, involving, among other things, the . training of some eighty or ninety children. The writer had the pleasure of witnessing a performance in Pahiatua hr 1916 given by Mrs Parkhouse in aid of the Brass Band of that town. For three nights the theatre was packed, many being turned away. There were 60 performers, among them, being 50 of Mrs Parkhouse’s, dancing pupils. Each item was a beautiful conception, artistically executed, the performers’ evolutions being exquisitely graceful and the effect irresistibly charming. The Pahiatua Herald gave a column to the performance after the first night, ** and for the last night visitors came from Woodville and Dannevirke to witness the dancing. Mrs Parkhouse, apart from ' having a wide knowledge of stage work and entertaining, is an expert in teaching children, and they will have an opportunity which should not be missed. Parents are invited to allow the children to call on Mrs Parkhouse,-so that rehearsals can be arranged for on an early date. The Borough Council has pledged itself to assist in every way possible, jand if nothing unforeseen occurs, Shannon will not only have a musical treat, but at the same time supply funds to e beautify the town.
