THE Shannon News TUESDAY, AUGUST 9, 1921. SHANNON SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL.
. This list is presented to you in order to give you the privilege of subscribing to a fund for the purpose of erecting a monument to the memory of our heroic soldiers, whose self-sacrifice, courage and endurance assisted in the overthrow of every form of barbarous injustice.
In these. appropriate words a movement has been launched with the object of erecting a memorial to the soldiers of the Shannon district who fought and gave their lives in the great war. When the call of duty came the young men of the district made ready response, and it is in that spirit that the memorial to their memory should be taken up. The people of Shannon have never been wantirig when an appeal is made to their sympathy and patriotism, and for that reason the projected memorial should have their unanimous support in the practical sense. The ladies of.the district are taking a commendable part in the work, and a committee lias been appointed to take charge of the arrangements and carry them -through. That they will carry them through successfully there js not the slightest doubt. Subscriptions towards tije memorial are; now being invited, Ljsis have been distributed within a radius of six miles of the town, by Which' means the residents may show their
sympathy with the project. It is intended that the. memorial shall he raised by voluntary donations only* so that whilst the smallest, sums will be thankfully received, no contributions will be solicited or canvassed for, and when erected the memorial will represent, the freewill offering of a grateful people. This is the right spirit, and one that will meet with a ready response from every part of the district. The ladies are to be congratulated on the enthusiasm they are displaying, and it will he the general wish that their efforts will be fully realised. This notice, of the movement cannot be closed in more fitting words than these from the, official appeal:— No form of pressure must be used obtaining subscriptions to this. Fund. All money given must be given spontaneously by the donor. The monument must free from all sacrilege or desecration —to be held for.-all time sacred in the minds of the people.
