FANCY DRESS BALL.

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION

On Friday night, in spite of storm and flood, Shannon turned out en fete to/ one of the most successiul functions of the year, that of Venerable Bede’s fancy dress and masquerade ball. The Druids’ Hall was well filled, and a large majority of those present were in fancy dresses, which were of all designs and colours, representing various nations, races, industries, animals, trades, vices, professions and common articles of commerce. There was the swarthy Indian, the unapproachable harem lady, the wily Japanese, the dainty and fascinating miss of the Early Victorian period, the prdud Rajah, the laughable Jester, the. bland “Chinee,” the. sweet maidens of Holland, and Ireland, the unbendable parcel, the clever lady of the hemp industry, and many more, so numerand various that their descriptions would fill the whole of the Shannpn News. Had the judging been done by individuals it would have been an unenviable task. The best and most original costumes were decided by popular vote, which left no doubt about the decision. The results were: Most original (ladies), Miss E. Butler, as a parcel; best costume (ladies), Miss Greedy, “Hemp Industry”; most original (men), Pat Cole, as “Chu Chin Chow”; best costume (men), Mr J. Murray, as “The Rajah.” The “best” were also considered the most complete. The general display was considered to be the best that- Shannon has yet witnessed. The hall was tastefully decorated with rainbow coloured streamers and grejenery. The stage was furnished as a drawing room, and one of the most important features, the supper, was controlled by an untiring committee of ladies, who made this part of the programme all that could he desired. The music was supplied by Mrs Butler’s orchestra, and by numerous ladies and gentlemen who played extras. The M.C.’s were Messrs. Quarrie and Olsson, and under their "management the dancing went with the . usual swing of Shannon balls. Altogether the function was a most enjoyable and successful one, and the younger fry are now looking forward .to', the Venerable Bede’s Children’s Fancy Dress Fete, to be held early in September.
