SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
USUAL MEETING. The Council met on Friday evening. Present :The Mayor (Mr Murdoch) and Crs. Hyde, Spencer, Fargher, Richardson and Murray. CORRESPONDENCE. The Greytown Town Board wrote asking for a copy of the by-laws, and it was decided, on the Mayor’s motion, seconded by Cr. Richardson, that a copy be sent, but pointing out the matter of alterations in the Explosives Act and the Public Health Act. Mr Dinnie, engineer, Public Works Department, wrote in reply to the Councils inquiry as to why the Department’s lorries were not using Grey Street for traffic between Shannon and the Mangahao works as had been arranged. Mr Dinnie stated that they had been' informed of the serious illness of a child in Grey Street, and the lorry drivers ceased to use the street meanwhile, so that the noise of the traffic would not disturb the child. Traffic would revert to Grey Street as soon as possible. The explanation was accepted as quite satisfactory. It was decided, on the Mayor’s motion, seconded by Cr. Spencer, that notice in terms of Health Officer’s report be served on Mr Warrington (owner), and Messrs. Osborn and Co. (agents), concerning building in Walton Terrace. GENERAL. Cr. Hyde brought up the matter of the light at Mrs Aldersey’s corner. Last year Mrs Aldersey had lit and maintained the light at 3s per week, but owing to the increased cost could not undertake doing the work for less than 4s per week this year. The Mayor stated that the light was a great convenience to the citizens. The Council, agreed, and Cr. Richardson moved, Cr. Fargher seconded, and it was carried, that Mrs Aldersey be paid'4s per week for the maintenance of the light. Reference to the inadequate condition of the railway station to meet the growing requirements of the town was made by Cr. Hyde, who said something should be done to improve the accommodation there. There was hardly room for the staff to move about, ventilation was bad, and the luggage and goods department far too small. He moved, that the attention of Mi* Newman) the member for the district, be called to the matter, and that he be asked to take some action to have improvements effected. This was. supported by Cr. Spencer and carried. ROADMAN’S REPORT. The roadman (Mr Dalzell) reported: t have put in a week on the borough. East Road napping stones and filling ruts. This week I have carted out metal for patching the worst places in different roads, and with the 'amount of heavy motor traffic on these roads, they will require a lot of metal to put them in order. I have ;put three loads of metal on the entrance to the school. Mr Retter has finished metalling his contract for the Public Works Department, of which 143 yards were carted out, and the last 30 yards of this quantity they carted to repair the damage done by their drays in Stafford Street. The report was adopted.
