SATURDAY’S RESULTS. SENIOR. Wanderers 8, Shannon 3. Hui Mai 11, Foxton 6. Kuku 17, Tokomaru 3. JUNIOR. Weraroa 4, Shannon 0. WANDERERS (8) V. SHANNON (3). This match, played on the Shannon ground on Saturday, proved a good contest. The opening stages were brightened up by plenty of fast forward work,, in which both packs showed plenty of dash, and there was little between them. Shannon got the ball more frequently from the scrums but prompt tackling prevented much advantage being gained. Play moved from end to end of the ground, R. Moynihan, Sands, and Parker doing good-work among the Red forwards, and Marshall,.Kelly, T. Moynihan and Ferguson among the backs. The Wanderers had about their best of the present season in the field, and their general display was a long way ahead of some .of their recent exhibitions. All the forwards were playing well, whilst the backs were opening up the game more than their opponents, and made good use of the cross kick, a. vast improvement on perpetual line kicking. After' a strong Shannon forward rush, which moved/Operations well inside the visitors’ twenty-five, a penalty was awarded the attackers, and Kelly goaled. Shannon 3, Wanderers 0. The Wanderers livened up the game, and the forwards stormed the home' citadel, sweeping through the defence and over .the line* Rose scoring. L. McDonald’s kick missed, leaving the scores equal. Shortly after, Ferguson, of the Shannon backs, had to retire with an injured leg. The second bout found the Wanderers attacking early, but the home team withstood these offensives, and a lot of fast, interesting play followed, with the visitors, having the best, : if anything, of the game. The Red forwards set up some dangerous rushes, and one of these was pushed right to the Wanderers’ line. A score looked like happening any moment, when the game took one' of those turns that stir the spectators up. When the Shannon rush had almost reached the opposing line, .Toha Winiata gathered the ball and beat three or four, men. He then transferred to Armstrong, who raced up'field, whilst the, Wanderers’ backs ran up into position. Armstrong handed on to his baclcs, and the ball travelled between half a dozen of them until Ford went over near the posts, to. score after one of the best pieces of work seen this season. James took "the kick, and, added the extra points. Wanderers 8, Shannon 3. There was no change in the score after that, although both teams pldyed at high pressure to the last. Mr Horo Karauti refereed.

WERAROA V. SHANNON. These juniors played the return game in Levin on Saturday. The match was well fought- out from start to finish, and a draw seemed probable when McLeavey took the ball and potted a goal for Weraroa. The Rovers defeated the Shannon Third fifteen on • Saturday by 10 points to 3, and the Levin High School team beat the Shannon Fourth Grade by 21 to 0. REP. MATCH POSTPONED. Owing to 1 lie Wanganui Union meeting the South Africans at Wanganui on Wednesday, the match Horowhenua v. Rangitikei, to have been played at Mart on on the same day, has been postponed till the following Wednesday, July 30. NOTES AND COMMENTS. The Referees’ Association is to be complimented on its efforts to effect some reform in football under the Horowhenua Union. It is a matter of common knowledge that fairly large sums are wagered on the result of matches where feeling runs high. The reports that players and referees are involved cannot be allowed to rest, and the Rugby Union would fail in its duty if it did not cany out a strict investigation into the truth or otherwise of -these corrupt practices in the field of sport. A familiar figure on • most Horowhenua. grounds is the “sport” who is always abusing the officials of the Union, especially when they endeavour to clear the line op see that the referees a.nd players get’ a fair deal.
