,•- ♦ ' EXCELSIOR (6) Y. SHANNON (2). This game, played at Shannon on Wednesday, afternoon was won by the celsior by 6 goals to 2. From the bully-off the visitors set up a strong attack, the forwards rushing straight through, and within two minutes of the start Field found the net. Immediately play recommenced another at lack was made and the same goaled again. The Excelsior hacks also forced the play and moved up to the home twenty-five. * A hot bout ensued, Tuohy getting a good shot through that registered Excelsior’s third goal. Just before half time the Shannon forwards, who had been showing faulty work, pulled themselves together, and a good effort on their part resulted in a score. The second half haq not been long started when Griffiths got the ball to the net again, making the score 4—l. The ensuing play passed up and down field until a fine passing rush between Fox, Claridge and Field saw the latter notch his third goal. Shannon was not done with yet, and they pressed Excelsior back to their twenty-five, where Takerai goaled. Play quieted down a little, until near the end, when Tuohy got in a well-directed shot, which ended the game with the score 6—2 in favour of Excelsior. For the winners Fox played a good back game, combined with clever, stick work. Griffiths, Tuohy and the veteran Claridge were much in evidence, and the usual Williams-Bell combination worked well. The forwards played a good game throughout. The Shannon forward work was weak, but Norrish, Takerai, Corry and Bovis, of the backs, . showed plenty of dash, whilst King at full back was sound. Messrs. Patrick and Murphy were the referees, We r aroa met Te Horo on the latter’s ground ' yesterday, and won after a close and exciting game by 3 goals to 2.
