The fall in the price of meat has caused a good deal of surprise,, for statistics show that there is a world shortage. It is estimated that there are now 587,000,000 meat-eaters in the world, against 300,000,000 half a century ago. The world demand for meat is proving quicker than the supply. - In the course of his'reply to a deputation in Palmerston North in regard to a Royal Show, the Minister of Agriculture stated that “when the political atmosphere cleared he would be prepared to ask Cabinet to set aside an amount with a view to holding a Royal Show annually.” The Minister states that what he intended to say was that when the “financial” atmosphere cleared he was prepared to make the request. “You can breed mutton and grow wool, but if you do not breed good men and women it is useless,” said Mr L. M. Isitt, M.P., when addressing a gathering of citizens at the Y.M.C.A. in Auckland on behalf of the boy scout movement. “But the children must be better iij every sense than their parents,” ne continued, “for forces are everywhere making for evil, and unless I we set to work to counteract these the j future before our children is not very , bright.” He further expressed the I opinion that the measure of determin- | ation the parents and citizens applied ; ;to the scout movement during the next ! few years would decide the influence over the country's youth in citizenship and Empire-building. .
