The Mayor slated at the Borough Couuc l l meeting on Friday evening that there had been a large attendance at the last meeting of ladies in connection with the Soldiers’ Memorial. The project was being pushed ahead, and lists would shortly be circulated. The Mayor stated at the Borough Council meeting on Friday evening 1 that in event of the request tor a sit- | ting oi the Magistrate's Court being granted, tie had promised the use oi the Council Chambers tor the Court ' sittings. -The Mayor's action was en- | dorsed. \ ' Cr. Fargher stated at the meeting ; ot the Borough Council on Friday evening that now an extra constable was stationed in Shannon, an endeavour should he made to enforce the by-laws more strictly. It was decided to send a copy of the by-laws to the police. The main road through the Tokomaru riding is in fine order despite the heavy rain of fast week. The scarified portion just to the north oi Shannon has (been much improved during the past week. It is the County Council's intention to continue the scarifying and metalling of this road to the Makerua railway station. Cr. .las. Richardson generously ottered, at the meeting of Hie Borough Council on Friday evening, to give the use of a team for a day to assist the beautifying work in Plimmer Terrace. Cr. Richardson was warmly thanked for his offer. Cr. Murray said lie hoped to see some definite progress tirade in beautifying, and | thought if volunteer workers were invited to help they would he forthcoming. Advice has been received from Christchurch that Miss Mona Neale, A.T.C.1... P.T.C.F., daughter of Mr B. Neale, of Shannon, has joined Dr. Bradshaw’s orchestra as first violinist, and will later take up the position of harpist. Miss Neale is a pupil of the Convent in Christchurch, and L)r. 1 Bradshaw is the well known organist, ft says much for the young lady’s gifts and training that, white yet in Iter teens, her musical talents should have been so far recognised as to gain Tier admittance to ibis notable orchestra. The improvements io the railway yard include an addition to the. goods shed, which is now in course of construction. The Miranui and Whitanui flaxmills are in full swing again. The screening of the Otaki-produeed pictures at Hie Mnmiland Thenlre on Saturday evening drew a crowded audience, who were delighted at the presentation of “Historic Oiaki.” The photography and production were equal to any of the imported pictures, and the success achieved speaks well for fufme productions from ihe same j source.
