SPORTING.

HECTOR GRAY IN ENGLAND. FIRST MOUNT A WINNER. i Mr G. Millen, trainer, of Weraroa, received the following telegram on Wednesday from Mr Sheath, secretary of the New Zealand Jockeys’ Association: “Gray won Ascot Stakes, of two miles, on Popally, at Ascot yesterday. This was his first ride in England.” This is a splendid achievement for the New Zealand horseman, as the Ascot Stakes is one of the principal events of the turf in the Old Country, and speaks well for the success of Gray’s sojourn in England. His future engagements will be watched with a good deal of interest by his admirers on this side of the world. W..8e11, the Levin horseman, visited the Auckland meeting on the last day, and rode Crowhurst and War Tank, but did not get into a place. He will ride at Hawke’s Bay next week. A. Rore, the Blenheim trainer, was seized with a serious illness at Otaki on the eve of the recent mepting there, 'and had to enter the hospital. His horses, Barleycorn and Jonquil, have been taken in charge temporarily by Nat Williams, the Otaki mentor. On recent running, Mattock should have a chance in the Steeples at the Napier meeting. , Molyneux looks well, in the Stewards’ Handicap at Hawke’s Bay, and with no Volos to beat, should be well forward in the running. There is a possibility of Messrs. Dwan Bros, sending American Beauty to Sydney. The daughter of Demosthenes has. just reached 15 hands, so that there will be plenty of opportunity in events to suit her. j Visiting relatives in Levin this week ! was the well known horseman, W. 1 Young. Among his successes on the turf are three winning rides in the Grand National Hurdles, his mounts being Shrapnel, Paisano and Continuance; the Grand National Steeples on Te Ari; the A..T.C. Derby on Cherubini; and New Zealand Derby on Bon Reve. Tho visit of Mr W. B. Kcmball V team to Auckland must have been expensive. He won. only 300 sovs. in stakes. The name of ‘'‘Abelard” has been claimed for the half-brother to Miss Do Val and Swance River, by Boniform. He will face in the ownership of Mrs T. Dwan. Master Strowan is already coming into strong favour for the Grand National Steeplechase. Going Up (Absurd —Marsala) is in future to be trained by J. Sullivan at Woodville.

Gang Awa’ will be a competitor af the Napier Park and Hawkes’ Bay meetings. The leading jockeys this season arc H. Gray, R. Reed, A. Reed, R. fc Bagby, and C. Emerson. Maniapoto, who died recently in. the North, sired Fisher and Omahu. Maniapoto, it may be mentioned, put up one of the greatest races ever witnessed in Australia when he was a youngster. Tigritiya, who has been put over the sticks, is reported to bo jumping clean--1 y- * Chant Royal went amiss prior to th'/ft Otaki meeting, Jj Master Lupin’s time record (7.5& 2-5) still stands as the fastest for the Great Northern Steeplechase.

The one-time useful Gluctanus- was let go for three guineas in the Auckland sale-ring on Tuesday. The Mountain Knight—Signal March filly, in Alev. Bdowne’s stable, is being hacked about, but in a rveck or so will be put to more strenuous work. The death occurred in Victoria recently of that great mare, Gladsome, af the age of 20. Gladsome, which was by Seaton Delaval from Miss Gladys, by Cuirassier, was a champion in her day. It is reported that C. Emerson was offered the riding on Mr G. D. Greenwood’s horses in their Australian engagements,. but declined, and O. Young has accepted the position, and, with his brother, H. Young, and Roy Reed, will leave for Sydney shortly. Omahu, which ran second to Fisher in the Great Northern Hurdles and filled a similar position in the Steeplechase to Coalition, is now being spoken of in connection with the Grand National double.

The Maryland Jockey Club, which has its offices in Baltimore, and races at Pimlico, gave 50 dollars to the train-

or of each winner at its May meeting, which lasted a fortnight. The presen tation was made after each race in view of the public. New Zealand 1 miners would appreciate something of the same kind. Manialiera, Vigilo, War Baby and Lord Usk are being kept going in view of forthcoming engagements, 'while the juveniles Redlogue and the Absurd— Martian Princess filly go through their exercises promisingly. Manialiera looks well, and it will not be for the want of perseverance on the part of T. George if the son of Maniapoto does not notch a race or two this season. The following are the principal winning owners at the recent Auckland Pv.C. meeting:—H. J. Palmer, £1450; A. McDonald, £1400; E. Riddiford, £1400; M. Gome, £1200; D. I. Meredith, £1200; Jas.
