A HEAVY DOWNPOUR.

DISTRICT STREAMS IN FLOOD. The heavy downpour in this district yesterday morning must have been of much greater volume on the high country for all the smaller district streams from the Ohau to the Tokomaru rose rapidly during the afternoon, and last evening most of them were running bank-high. About Shannon the water submerged, some of the lowlying country near the Manawatu, whilst the river itself rose considerably. During the afternoon the county engineer (Mr W. N. Anderson) motored through to inspect the Tokomaru stream, and the protective work carried out there after the last big flood. He found that the river was in fairly high flood, and the new works were standing the pressure very well. Between Shannon and Levin there was a lot of surface water about, and the Koputaroa stream at Ihaka.ra was in a swollen condition, and in places had broken over the banks. As the rain had practically ceased last evening, no great damage is anticipated.
