Timaru Druid Lodge
GRAND LODGE MEETING. The adjourned meeting of the District Grand Lodge, United Ancient Order of Druids, was held in the Foresters’ Hall, George street, last evening, the lodge being called to take the order of business at 6.30 The District Grand Lodge President, Brother F, W. Penfold, presided, supported by P.D.G. President Brother J. R Tulley ; D.G.Y. President, Brother J. Rose 5 D.G. Secretary Brother T. Walker ; D.G. Treasurer Brother A. 0. Birt ; D.G. Guardian Brother W. Bailey ; and the following representatives were also present Pioneer—Past District Presidents Brothers J. Bose, J. Harris, and 0 Tomson 5 Hope of St. Albans—PA. Brother J. Herriot; Mistletoe P D.P, Brother W. Bailey ; Ethelbert- -P.A. Brother A. Parish ; Lyttelton Heart of Oak—P.S. Brother W T. Barnes; Star of Angieaea—P.A. Brother T. Greaves; Perseverance P A. Brother G. Christmas ; Hope of Amberley P.A, Brother B. A. Rogers; Anchor P.D P. Brother J 0. Dobson; Timaru, P.D.P. Brother J. S. Keith end P.y Brother J. Boulden ; Star of Ashburton, P D.P, Brother J. H. Pauling. Brother W. T. Barnes was elected Minute Secretary. The President intimated that a Friendly Societies Demonstration would take place in Christchurch on March 29ih in aid of the sufferers by the Queensland floods. Routine business having thus been disposed of consideration of proposed alterations and au.c.aments to rules was taken. The following amendments referring to the Board of Management were after discussion carried :—Buie 3 -In the 17th line strike out the words " elected annually,” and in lieu insert “ to be elected at the annual meeting.” 19th line Strike out the words “ each Lodge ehall be nominated for,” and insert “any lodge shall be elected to ” 20th lino—Strike out the words “ at each annual election.” Rule 3rd 2nd and 3rd lines, strike out the words and figures i “ at 7.30 p.m , ateuch place as the board of management may appoint, and insert “ at such time and place as the District Grand Lodge, in session assembled, may from time to time decide upon.” Rule 19—Strike out the first paragraph, and substitute the following Ail District Presidents shall be nominated and elected by the lodges in their respective districts. The candidate polling the greatest total number of votes in hia district shall bo elected, subject always to the approval of the board of management Non:! but Past Arches of twelve months standing, and who have taken the Past Arch Degree, shall be eligible for the office of District President.” Rule 90—Add the following words:—“Clearance# may bo granted to honorary members. Any ledge,'
shall be at liberty to accept or reject the same on payment of necessary fees as per rule 132.” Buie 132 Insert the word financial” between the words “any mem* her” in the first line Notice of an alter* atioa to rule 93, bearing on tha ages of excepting the one granting the clearance, members and their weekly payments, as divided i Jo incidental and sick and funeral contributions, was held over till the halfyearly meeting in Keptecnber by the unanimous vote of the representatives. It was agreed to hold the next meeting of the Grand Lodge at Christchurch, and the confirmation of business closed the Grand Lodge session. An adjournment was then made to the Barnard street ball, where a splendid dinner was served for the representatives, members and guests of the Timaru Lodge of Druids. The catering was encrusted to the able bands of Mr D. McGuinness of the Club Hotel, and he provided a spread that called the admiration of all. The tables were conveniently laid, tastefully decorated, and a very large company eat down to do justice to the first class bill-of-fare. The Arch Druid {Bro. 11. W. Simpson) ably presided at the banquet. 'lhe following toasts were duly honoured and responded to:-“The Queen and the Druids, ~bo District Grand Lodge,” “ The Visitors,” “ The Ashburton Lod<»e ” “ The Timaru Lodge,” “ The Ladies” “ The Host.” When responding to the toast of the *• District Grand Lodge.” Bro. T. Walker said the District on January Ist, 1890, consisted of 11 Lodges, with 694 financial members, and i s funds amounted to £5299 18s, and am January Ist, 1893, there were 14 Lodge* in the District with' a membership of 973, with funds amounting to £8527 2s 6d. During the same period 185 members left by resignation, clearance, arrears, etc. ihe amount of six pay paid for the three years was £2207 Os 6d, and £3057 5s lOd was paid to doctors and medicine. The district paid during the three years for funeral allowances the sum of £370. Songs were rendered by Bros. W. M. Howe (Timaru) ; J. Eoae (Christchurch) ; F. 0, Watson (Timaru) ; W. T. Barnes (Lyttelton) • J. C. Hobson (Woolston) ; J. tj. Keith (Timaru) ; J, R. Tulley (Christchurch) • C Toms or. (Chris! church) ; B. Higgins (Ashburton) j J. Harris (Christchurch) ; H. Beddek (limaru) ; F. W. Penfold (Christchurch). Bros J. Bose, F. C. Watson, J. T. Barnes. Higgins and Beddek received encores*. Recitations were given by Bros. O. Homo (Timaru) ; W. T. Barnes (Lyttelton); and the gathering broke up about midnight by singing ‘ Auld Lang Syne " and “ God Have the Queen,” ail having thoroughly enjoyed themselves,
